Modern/Contemporary

Our Modern/Contemporary class combine the technical and expressive styles which go hand in hand to maximise your training. Contemporary involves unusual and challenging movements which require the strong technique that Modern Dance teaches, in order to keep the dancers body safe.Modern dance emphasises a strong technical foundation that enables a dancer to focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance. Technique is essential for leaps and turns and correct posture is needed to execute moves. This is a great class to enhance flexibility too, where students will lengthen and strengthen their muscles. Students are now able to work up towards taking ISTD examinations in Modern if they wish.Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, classical ballet and more recently street dance. Contemporary dancers work to connect the mind and the body through fluid and dynamic dance movements and focus on floor work using gravity to pull them down. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music. Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Lester Horton and more recently Matthew Bourne. Choreography is often created through improvisation.

Acro gained popularity with the wide spread success of the contemporary circus productions of Cirque du Soleil.

Main stream media including dance television programs like ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ and ‘Dance Moms’ have further fuelled its demand in amateur competitive dance and studio settings.

In this class pupils will learn things like cartwheels and roly-polys to more advanced techniques including balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, flexibility, contortion and strength. We follow the Acrobatic Arts syllabus to ensure fun and safe progressions.
